Motorists witnessed a spectacular emergency landing outside the Canadian city of Quebec on Thursday. The pilot of a Piper Cherokee landed his small plane in the middle of the busy highway about 20 kilometers outside the city. A video of the scene is now going around the world.
Shortly afterwards, the pilot at Radio-Canada explained what had happened: “I decided to take a little walk to get out for a while.” But as soon as he was in the air, his engine started to have problems. “It made strange noises and I lost strength as I drove,” he said. And further: “I thought my chances of getting to the airport were less than 50 percent.”
In consultation with the local control tower, he then decided to land his plane as soon as possible directly on the highway below him. “Apart from the fact that there are cars, a freeway is a very nice runway,” he said.
