25 Percent Labor Wage Cut, DPR Member: People Suffer During Ramadan and Eid

TEMPO.CO, JakartaMember of Commission IX DPR RI Kurniasih Mufidayanti questioned the government’s decision to issue Permenaker Number 5 of 2023. Regulations that allow wage cuts up to 25 percent is considered to be burdensome for workers. What if wage deductions are made when Ramadhan and Idul Fitri where the price of basic necessities goes up.

“Cutting wages in labor-intensive industries will obviously burden workers. Moreover, the discount is quite large, up to 25 percent and can last for six months,” Kurniasih said through a written statement received TempoMonday, March 20, 2023.

Kurniasih said, the aim of industrial relations should be to make efficiency in the HR sector, either in the form of salary reductions or layoffs, as the last resort after there are no other options. According to him, efficiency in the field of HR should not be taken as the easiest solution. Because workers will be the victims.

“Have other incentives or policies been implemented to stimulate the export industry in the form of relief cost before taking a pay cut policy? I think there are many other alternatives that can be done,” said the Prosperous Justice Party politician.

Kurniasih also assessed the Ministry of Manpower’s policies Ida Fauziyah it will also reduce the purchasing power of the people at the grassroots level by a significant amount. Moreover, now has entered the month of Ramadan and ahead of Eid al-Fitr. This means that many workers or laborers need to spend more on consumption, while generally the price of basic necessities will rise.

“Right now we are experiencing an increase in the price of rice as a basic need, not to mention the added moments of Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr. But the policy is not only about the wrong moment, the substance of cutting workers’ wages is also not right,” he said.

Kurniasih appealed to every policy in industrial relations to be made in the spirit of protecting workers. This is because their position does not always benefit from large-scale policies such as the Job Creation Law and the Job Creation Perpu.
