31,000 people are living with HIV (official)

In Niger, despite the efforts made by the State and its partners in the fight against HIV, around 31,000 people are living with the virus, including 2,000 pregnant women and at least 3,200 children, the resident coordinator said on Wednesday in Niamey. of the United Nations System in Niger Louise Aubin, on the occasion of World AIDS Day.

In addition, according to the Nigerien Minister of Public Health, Idi Illiassou Mainassara, “the high rate of transmission of HIV from mother to child (17% in 2020), and the regular maintenance of biological monitoring devices for living patients. with the virus, there are still challenges for the national response ”.

However, he noted significant progress made in the fight against HIV “with a marked improvement in the availability of prevention, treatment, care and support services, thanks to the strong involvement of the highest authorities, national, bilateral and multilateral actors, and technical and financial partners ”.

Among the progress made, he also underlined “the free screening, treatment of AIDS and socio-economic support for patients, women and young people”.
