pennsylvania Voters to Decide Fate of Supreme Court justices
HARRISBURG, Pa. – Pennsylvania voters will decide the fate of three state Supreme Court justices this Election Day. Typically, these judicial retention elections don’t get much attention.
Justices Christine Donohue, Kevin Dougherty, and david Wecht – all Democrats – are on the november 4th ballot. Voters will choose whether to grant them new ten-year terms on the court.
Donohue will reach the mandatory retirement age of 75 in 2027, regardless of the election outcome.
Retention elections differ from typical elections. Voters don’t choose between candidates; they simply vote “yes” or “no” on whether to keep the current justices. A “yes” vote retains the justice; a “no” vote opens the position for a new election.
These justices have been involved in several high-profile cases. Dougherty, for example, joined the majority in upholding Pennsylvania’s mail-in voting law. wecht has been a vocal advocate for criminal justice reform.Donohue has a long history of work on family law issues.
Judicial retention elections are designed to insulate the courts from political pressure. The idea is that judges should be evaluated on their performance, not their political affiliations. However, some argue that low voter turnout in these elections can make them vulnerable to influence from special interest groups.
Voters should research the justices’ records and consider their qualifications before casting their ballots. Information about the justices’ backgrounds and rulings is available on the Pennsylvania court system’s website: https://www.pacourts.us/
