The journalist ultramacrista Jorge Lanata lost face to argentine scientists who were chosen by the national government to provide funding and encourage them to conduct research related to the coronavirus. It happened last Sunday, in the return of Journalism For All, and one of those chosen was Fernando Sassetti, specialist, entre ríos, who made a strong disclaimer, and disarmed the feeble arguments put forth by the journalist of Clarín.
THE TORQUE OF THE ANTICUARENTENA
Lanata noted that the scientists chosen in the framework of the call “or are officers, or are very like-minded and militant, government”. Despite the fact that list is 64, the journalist limited his definition to two examples -arguing one on the basis of a message on Twitter – and went of topic, leaving in the air the idea of an accommodation among the elect.
The situation sparked the outrage of Sassetti, who wrote a long disclaimer -which had access to The Uncap – where he destroyed the statements of Lanata: “His words expressed in your program PPT last Sunday, cast doubt on my honor and our merits to be among the sixty-four projects selected by the Agency. I very much regret that without knowledge of our work and a proposal to publish my name and the name of the Municipalities Green Gold and Diamond by saying that we are in that place by being ‘friends’ of the government.”
“You should care seriously of the scientific projects on the that is going to talk and get to know many of the issues that move us. We think that it is still possible and necessary in our country to design and develop technologies that will improve the health care of our people, especially in this serious problem of the pandemic of the coronavirus which affects the health of our population, especially of those sectors that are most disadvantaged,” he added.
Before the end, the scientist stressed: “it Is necessary that our universities generate knowledge and technologies to address the health care of our people, thinking in a country that is more just and in solidarity, where it is not lack of philanthropists to address the right to health. We will continue studying, researching and working to ensure that science and technology are tools at the service of the great majority popular of our country and not the privilege of an elite“.
Fernando Sassetti is a researcher of the Faculty of Engineering of the National University of entre Rios-UNER-, whose headquarters is located in Oro Verde, a few kilometers from Paraná. The scientific entrerriano was selected at the national level for funding, in the framework of a quota of research linked to the Covid-19, which launched the Agency of Promotion of Research, Technological Development and Innovation Agency (agencia I+D+I), a device of coordination led by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation.
In your particular case, Sassetti designed a project called “Implementation of a system of sanitary information based on free software for the local management of epidemics in municipalities”. Your project, along with 63 other-including the other from entre ríos, Carlos Pais – was chosen from among 900 proposals that arrived from all corners of the country, with various disciplines and approaches specific about the coronavirus. The selection was in charge of 26 members of a commission rating agency formed by specialists in the Conicet, University of Buenos Aires -UBA-; the National University of Córdoba; Instituto Tecnológico de Buenos Aires -ITBA-; National University of Plata; National University of the South; the Founding Host and the Universidad Isalud. As a criterion of choice had to take into account “the appropriateness of the projects to the objectives proposed by the call, the time-limits within which it was to have results, their relevance and impact, the methodology proposed, their feasibility and the degree of scientific and technological development involved”, according to what is indicated officially.
Sassetti, your team and your project
Sassetti is teaching Assistant of the course Organization of the Health Systems of the Faculty of Engineering of the National University of entre Rios-UNER – since 2012, after having graduated in December of 2001. “End of the university career was a major effort for me and much more to my family; my father was a Railroad man and my mom a Telephone Operator in the company Entel, in the city of San Cristóbal (Santa Fe); in the years ‘90 were dismissed under the figure of withdrawals volunteers, the years that followed were difficult,” he stressed in his writing.
About the project presented on this occasion, the scientist pointed out that he was executed, in large part, under the mode home office: “Using up the days on Saturdays and Sundays, as is usual in the life of the researchers, that in the most of the opportunities we lack the financial resources to make our projects can move forward. Those who try to make science and technology in our country we are accustomed to the evaluation of pairs that often define our fate in the system, are many years of work to arrive at an assessment that defines the permanence in the system or if we get the necessary resources to move forward with our projects.”
The team of researchers who undertook the project is composed by 26 people, among those who were involved in activities of administrative management, researchers, advisors, and fellows. The amount of the budget to carry out the project is $2.681.180, of which $1.670.000 pesos (62.3 %) will be destined to the remuneration of the six fellows who will work on the project for over a year: “Neither my person nor the researchers involved in the project will receive money from the funding Agency to do so, this responds to the need of that – the youngest in the team who are not employees of the university and who have been collaborating on an ad honorem for many years – can obtain a stipend for the work they will do.”
In his letter, the expert it commissioned to enumerate its passage through the teaching and their post-graduate studies: auxiliary contest history, and public class in the subject Organization of Health Systems; a master’s degree in Management of Services and Health Systems at the National University of Rosario-studying the impact of the crisis on the growth of children, in two neighborhoods of the city of Paraná and its articulation with health centres to improve their nutritional quality – and a phd at the National University of Litoral -UNL-, clarifying: “I was able to fulfill my desire of getting to study a scientific career and to try to develop technology for health care in our country.” And he added: “I Work in a chair very small, of a school small in a small province, but with people who are very committed and a hard worker who understands that being in a Public University is a huge privilege and a great responsibility.”
Sassetti actively participates in joint projects with the municipality of Oro Verde and Diamond, thanks to that with other teachers, students and graduates decided to work on the health problems of their communities. A project carried out by them on the control of Aedes Aegipty -mosquito-dengue – was recognized by the Ministry of Health and the Pan american Health Organization in the year 2016. Previously, in 2012, participated in the first implementation of GNU Health -distributed computer system under software free – in one hospital in the province of Between Rivers, with the object of distributing it, and not have to pay for licenses: “Since several years we work with small effectors of health, hospitals and municipalities in the implementation of GNU Health, because we understand that it is a tool that allows you to address the needs of the effectors and the regulations in force with weak investment. We are interested in providing technologies that help health workers to do their work better and to improve the care of the health of the people.”
The above is in addition to the tasks of research and university extension in the service of Endocrinology of the Hospital of San Martín and in the Hospital School of Mental Health of the city of Paraná, without funding any of the following: “we do It because we believe that it is necessary to articulate the activities that are carried out from the university with what happens in our hospitals.
