Last December, they performed at the same gala in Saudi Arabia, but with different rivals. And they both had no reason to be pleased. Aleksander Powitkin, according to the judges, drew with Michael Hunter, Dillian Whyte defeated Mariusz Wach with problems. Now the Russian and the Jamaican-born Briton will meet in London. The winner will become the mandatory contender for the WBC heavyweight belt and face the winner of Tyson Fury’s third match against Deontay Wilder. For now, the gentlemen are showing each other respect. The 40-year-old Povetkin argues that this does not have to be his last chance for great fights, but in fact it is. – What matters is victory. I don’t particularly think of Whyte’s left sickle as my left sickle. Any blow can decide the result, and the most dangerous are those that are not visible. Not only the left hook – says the Russian, Olympic champion from Athens 2004.
32-year-old Whyte, in turn, foreshadows thunder. – I will cause chaos and then bring violence. Powitkin is the top three of the last fifteen years in the heavyweight division. He is experienced and I respect him. Especially since this is his great chance to take my place as a contender – explains Whyte.
The weigh-in ceremony took place on Friday, the Russian weighs only 101.6 kg and Dillian – 114.5 kg (before Wach he weighed 122.6 kg).
– Either Powellkin will win ahead of time in the first rounds or Whyte on points thanks to better condition. However, there are many unknowns – says Fyodor Łapin. Trainer incl. Krzysztof Głowacki adds that it is difficult to predict the form of boxers after such a long break. “Whyte is younger, so he should be able to deal with the older Povetkin.” But the Brit, after the last round with Jospeh Parker (in July 2018, Whyte won on points – editorial note), in which he fought for his life, is no longer the same. And in terms of boxing skills, Povetkin is much better. It’s just that in the last fights it was difficult for him, if he did not gain an advantage at the beginning – the coach analyzes.
TVP Sport will show the fight.
