DA was a surprise for the other spectators and for the fantastic players: Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) visited a Niners Chemnitz second division basketball match on Sunday. The federal press office confirmed the visit on Sunday evening, which had not been announced.
Government spokesman Steffen Seibert tweeted: "The great basketball club has committed itself to tolerance and cohesion in the city.
Previously, the "Free Press" in Chemnitz spoke about it. Merkel was accompanied to the Niner meeting against the Ehingen Urspring team of the Prime Minister of Saxony Michael Kretschmer (CDU) and the mayor of Chemnitz, Barbara Ludwig (SPD).
The chancellor visited the club in November and met young players. At the time, he had decided to come once to a team match in Chemnitz, a government spokesman said.
Merkel visited Chemnitz on November 16, about three months after a fatal attack with a knife against a German. The bloody act has sparked demonstrations of the right and xenophobic attacks in the city.
The Niners won the game on Sunday with 84:73 and are at the top of the league in the 2nd basketball league. Merkel has wished the Chemnitz club good luck in the fight for promotion.
