At least 132 people died in an earthquake magnitude 5.6 The incident occurred Friday night in a remote area of western Nepal, authorities who deployed security forces to help with rescue efforts said Saturday.
The tremor had its epicenter 42 km south of Jumlanear the border with Tibet, and was located only 18 kilometers deep, according to the United States Geological Survey.
“92 people died in Jajarkot and 40 in Rukum,” Interior Ministry spokesman Narayan Prasad Bhattarai told AFP, referring to the two districts hardest hit by the shock.
National police spokesman Kuber Kathayat said authorities had counted more than 100 injuries in these two districts.
Videos and photographs published on social networks showed the local population digging in the middle of the night among the rubble of destroyed buildings in search of survivors.
