VIENNA (dpa-AFX) – Tourism in Austria has started slowly after the reopening of the corona-dependent closed hotels. At 5.2 million, the number of overnight stays in June was 59 percent lower than in June 2019, as the Austrian statistics office announced on Monday. Austrian tourists accounted for most of the overnight stays; holidaymakers from Germany made up a third.
The number of travelers from abroad dropped particularly sharply: the number of overnight stays by Germans fell by 65 percent compared to the previous year and that of Swiss by more than 66 percent. There was more than 90 percent decline in travelers from the USA, France, Sweden and Russia. In percentage terms, the decline in overnight stays hit five and four-star hotels the hardest and private accommodation the least.
The temporary closure of the hotels in the spring has a negative impact on the balance sheet. Despite the strong winter months of January and February, overnight stays for the entire first half of the year declined by 36.8 percent compared to the previous year
