Andersson began acting as a teenager and made a career in film, television and on stage. She became famous for her work with Bergman. He discovered her when he made a commercial in 1951. Their collaboration spanned the 50s to the 80s. This resulted in works such as “The Seventh Seal” (1957), “Wild Strawberries” (1957) or the film “Persona” (1966), through which Andersson became internationally known. Hollywood became aware of her and she received roles in, among other things, “Duel in Diablo” (1966) or “An Enemy of the People” (1978).

In later years Andersson played some roles on television and worked as a theater director. In the 50s, the actress is said to have had a love affair with Bergman. But she has married three other men: the Swedish director and screenwriter Kjell Grede, the marriage lasted from 1960 to 1973; the politician and author Per Ahlmark (1979-1981); and in 2004 she gave the doctor Gabriel Mora Baeza the javascript.
