USA extended and reassigned for 18 months the immigration protection known as TPS for Venezuelans who have been in the country since before July 31, 2023, reported the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
There are some 242,700 TPS beneficiaries under the existing designation and thanks to the reassignment, around 472,000 additional Venezuelans could request this protection that grants residence and work permits, he added in a statement.
The Secretary of Homeland Security Alexander Mayorkas He made the decision “due to the growing instability and lack of security in Venezuela,” he says.
The program was established by the Congress for foreign citizens who cannot safely return to their country due to natural disasters, armed conflict or other extraordinary conditions.
TPS “provides people who are already in the United States with protection against expulsion” but it is essential that Venezuelans understand that those who arrived here after July 31, 2023 are not eligible for such protection,” Mayorkas states, quoted in the text.
