A Roman Catholic bishop in India was acquitted on Friday of raping a nun several times in two years.
He was the first bishop in India to be tried for a sexual crime. He was acquitted following a lawsuit in India’s southern state of Kerala.
He was accused of repeatedly raping a nun between 2014 and 2016. The bishop denied all the charges.
The nun is said to have approached the church about the case several times, but went to the police when she was not heard. Police in riot gear stormed a rally on Friday, removing hundreds of protesters by truck.
The nuns have also written to the Vatican asking them to intervene. They have since faced strong criticism among India’s Christians, and been subjected to threats.
The bishop was arrested in 2018 and was later released on bail.
