Breast Cancer Screening Case and Energy Harvesting Material at the 2020 James Dyson Award

Every year since 2004, the James Dyson Award has recognized inventors, designers and engineers who have developed a particularly ingenious product. 2020 is no exception to the rule.

Despite the health crisis, or perhaps thanks to the epidemic, many inventors have submitted their products for the James Dyson Award (JDA). And the first winner of this very special edition is the Spanish inventor Judit Giró Benet who, at 23, imagined the Blue box. This is a new way to screen for breast cancer at home using a urine sample.

Two winners in 2020

Today, traditional screenings require women to go to a hospital or medical facility and undergo an invasive, sometimes painful, and often expensive procedure. 40% of women do not have mammograms for these reasons, hence the great interest of the Blue Box.

The box performs chemical analysis of urine samples and sends the results to a cloud that will analyze them and make a diagnosis. The JDA will support this project which will require more work for prototyping and development of analysis software.

The other winner of this 2020 edition (the first in the Sustainable Development category) is Carvey Ehren Maigue, creator of theAuREUS. At age 27, this young Filipino envisioned a material that can be attached to a pre-existing structure or surface to collect ultraviolet light and convert it into visible light to generate electricity.

Whether the sun is shining or the sky is cloudy, Carvey’s material continues to generate electricity as particles in his material absorb ultraviolet rays, allowing them to shine. When the particles “rest”, they remove excess energy. All the things that traditional solar panels cannot do. The two winners each receive the sum of € 35,000.
