Before their performances, the six guys from Editors send everyone out of the room. That’s when it’s their “power hour”.

That’s what it’s about

  • With “EBM” the seventh studio album by the band Editors is out.

  • The six Brits played two concerts in Switzerland in October – one at Les Docks in Lausanne and one at the Volkshaus in Zurich.

  • The band met 20 minutes before their Zurich concert.

How do you like it in Zurich?
Tom Smith: Switzerland in general is very picturesque. I went for a walk by the lake, it was very nice. Then we ate together in a restaurant, but it hurt our wallet (laughs).

What’s the first thing you do when you’re in a new city?
Blank Mass: Our guitarist Elliott is our ramen king. He is good at finding restaurants that have ramen dishes. (Japanese noodle soup, editor’s note)
TS: Once we find our way around the area, we look for a coffee shop to get our morning coffee. Sometimes we also do sports.

You’ve been making music as editors for 20 years. Do you have any rituals before a concert?
BM: For the first time we’re sending everyone out who doesn’t belong to the band. Then we play our songs and have a drink together. We call this our «power hour».

In an all-male group, you can quickly become little boys again. Does this happen to you too?
BM: Maybe before this interview there was one or the other who played Fifa on the tour bus.
TS: It’s a “Peter Pan” thing, you want to stay young forever. Being in a band probably means wanting to be younger than you are.

So your goal is to become like the Rolling Stones?
BM: Yes, that is the essential existence of an artist. You just want to leave as much as possible for the people who come after you.

Have you ever thought about getting a woman into your band?
TS: That would actually be great. Unfortunately, it has never worked so far. Maybe one day a duet would be an alternative. We had Rachel Goswall from Slowdive who sang on our album «Dream». She spent a lot of time with us in the recording studio back then.
BM: Never say Never.

What do you do when you don’t feel like being creative and recording music?
TS: When we’re not playing Fifa on the tour bus, we talk about football.
BM: It’s actually quite often about football.

What was your funniest moment as a band?
TS: We once had a fun evening at a Gothic Festival in Munich. Almost everyone wore black there. We felt like we were in a Tim Burton film. Our show went great. Suddenly a guy got on stage who was the only one wearing a pink thong and had a pink rocking horse with him. That was pretty funny and crazy.

Is there something musically that you’ve always wanted to try?
BM: I would like to be able to play the pedal steel guitar. But that is not that easy. Pros always make it look so easy.
TS: We’ve never played in South America. We have a lot of fans there who want to see us live. Unfortunately we never got further than Mexico. Maybe we can change that with this album.
