(CNN) –– The hugely famous K-pop band BTS will be taking a break to work on solo projects, the group announced Tuesday.
BTS broke the news on video during their “Festa dinner” celebration for the band’s ninth anniversary.
The group consists of artists RM, Jin, V, J-Hope, Suga, Jimin, and Jungkook.
“Let’s take a break now,” said group member Suga. However, a representative for the group told CNN, “To be clear, they are not on hiatus. But they will be taking some time to explore some solo projects at the moment and remain active in a number of different formats.”
“The problem with K-pop and the whole idol system is that they don’t give you time to mature. You have to keep making music and keep doing something. And after I get up in the morning and do my makeup, there’s no time to grow up,” shared RM, a member of the group.
“I used to be able to balance just working on music and doing our group promotions, but now I can’t do both. It’s impossible, it just won’t work. I can’t be doing group stuff and then suddenly shift focus to my own work like lighting a switch,” RM continued. “I realized that I need time to myself.”
RM added that he realized the group had changed during the covid-19 pandemic, when they released hit singles like “Dynamite”, “Butter” and “Permission to Dance”.
“I think 90% of our fans would support us no matter what kind of music or direction we choose,” said V.
“J-Hope told me this before: We could focus on our solo work this time and later when we meet again as a group, that synergy will be like no other,” said V.
“We can’t help but think about our fans. I think now, finally, we’ve come to think about what kind of artists we want our fans to remember. I think that’s why we’re having a hard time right now. We’re trying to find our identity.” and that’s a long and tiring process,” Jimin added.
“I think that change is what we need right now,” J-Hope said, “It’s important for BTS to start our second chapter.”
The group’s worldwide recognition increased in 2018 with their albums Love Yourself: Answer y Love Yourself: Tear. They also scored big hits with popular collaborations with Coldplay, Halsey, Ed Sheeran and other artists.
During a 2020 interview with CNN, J Hope described the group’s focus on their careers.
“We try not to set any standards to define success, because if you set those standards it’s very taxing physically and mentally to reach those goals,” J-Hope said.
“Instead, we just put effort into what we do in our lives and emotions, and stay true to that. And that ultimately leads to a lot of success. That’s what I’m trying to do. And by doing that, we try to be true to ourselves.”
BTS have frequently been compared to The Beatles: they even broke one of the FabFour records with three Billboard No. 1 albums in a single year.
His devoted fan base calls himself “BTS Army”, which he has promoted his music and defended on social networks in 2019, when the group was excluded from the nominations for the Grammys. Since then, they have won two Grammy Awards for Best Pop/Duo Performance.
