Caesar, the dog who suffers from separation anxiety is adopted by the inmates and becomes a social worker in prison

Among the many adoptions that are successful every day, the one that arrives from Australia is certainly unique. A dog with severe separation anxiety issues has finally found peace inside a… prison. That’s right. The news comes from the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, the country’s main public broadcasting company, which confirms that Caesar, a cross between a Staffordshire bull terrier and a Labrador, has just been adopted (albeit for a temporary period) by the inmates of Ron Barwick’s prison in southern Tasmania.

Caesar had visited the facility through the Pups on Parole program, a joint initiative between the prison and the Dogs Home of Tasmania association in which inmates train and socialize with dogs to prepare them for future adoption. The program has been active for over 10 years and has a resounding success rate: 100% of the cases treated end up with the introduction of the animal into the family.

According to the custodial officers, the animal had landed in prison for some sort of extra training capable of alleviating some of his nervous stress, according to the vets, due to severe separation and abandonment anxiety. “He couldn’t be left alone for more than half an hour at a time,” they also pointed out. And it is in this particular context that a group of prisoners has mobilized to collect the approximately 1,400 Australian dollars (870 euros) needed for adoption, veterinary and food expenses.

Caesar can thus now count on constant human company, 24 hours a day, and – among other things – on an affection that he hadn’t been able to find, and certainly not his fault, outside. “When he was in the shelter, reality says this – comment the volunteers – Caesar had not convinced anyone to adopt him”.

The constant presence of the dog in prison, according to prison assistants, has already improved the psychological condition of the prisoners who have welcomed him and are looking after him, albeit within the limits allowed by internal regulations.

Unfortunately, however, again on the basis of the regulation, Caesar will leave prison in the next few weeks: outside, now that his qualities are known, there is already a queue of candidates to take care of him.
