(CNN) – Remember when you said you wanted to move to Canada? This is a good time to start packing.
The Canadian parliament has announced plans to add over a million new permanent residents over the next three years. This is almost one percent of the country's population each year.
Canada has received over 286,000 permanent residents in 2017 and projects that could reach 350,000 this year.
And 360,000 in 2020.
And 370,000 in 2021.
These are many immigrants, right?
"Thanks in large part to the newcomers we have welcomed throughout our history, Canada has become the strong and vibrant country we all enjoy," said Ahmed Hussen, Canadian Minister for Immigration, Refugees and citizenship.
Hussen, a Somali immigrant, said that the arrival would help counteract the aging of the Canadian population and the decline in the birth rate, while increasing its workforce.
Canada's friendly attitude towards new residents comes when many other Western nations, including the United States, adopt more restrictive immigration policies.
Canada is particularly dedicated to offering protection to refugees. In 2017, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees reported unprecedented levels of refugees and the number of displaced persons reached 68.5 million.
The Canadian Ministry of Immigration offered US $ 5.6 million to support global resettlement initiatives.
