During the siege of Jerusalem, Sennacherib, king of Assyria, sent messengers to Hezekiah, king of Judah.
He said, “This is what you are to say to Hezekiah king of Judah, ‘Do not let your God, in whom you trust, deceive you by promising that Jerusalem will not be handed over to the king of Assyria.
Behold, thou hast heard what the kings of Assyria have done to all lands, by destroying them utterly. Will this dish of yours be released? ”
Hezekiah received the letter from the messengers and read it. Then he went to the house of the Lord and presented the letter before the Lord.
Hezekiah prayed before the Lord, “O Lord, the God of Israel, who sits enthroned above the cherubim! You alone are the God of all the kingdoms of the earth.
Thou hast made the heavens and the earth. Incline thine ear, O Lord, and hear; open thine eyes, and behold, O Lord; listen to the words of Sennacherib which he has sent to dishonor the living God.
