She is still in quarantine at home, but the second coronavirus test was also negative: Chancellor Angela Merkel is said to be doing well in her home office. Nevertheless, she wants to be tested again.
Chancellor Angela Merkel’s domestic corona quarantine will continue until at least the beginning of next week. Even in the second test for the novel corona virus, Merkel found no infection, a government spokesman said in Berlin on Wednesday. “The Chancellor continues to work from home quarantine and will be tested again next week.”
Government spokesman Steffen Seibert had previously said the Chancellor was doing well. She runs her business from home. Merkel is also in close contact with the cabinet members and their employees. This Thursday, she plans to attend a special video summit of the heads of state and government of the leading economic powers (G20) on the corona crisis and a summit of EU heads of state and government to combat the pandemic in the same format.
Merkel was unable to participate in the decision on the aid package
Because of the quarantine, the Chancellor was unable to attend the Bundestag session, which was decisive for the aid packages against the corona crisis. The opening speech of the general debate was left to Vice Chancellor Olaf Scholz. The finance minister said at the beginning of his speech that he wanted to “send the cordial greetings to the Chancellor, who would have liked to be there and would have spoken today”. He applauded the MPs with broad applause: “I think I can also send warm regards to your home office on your behalf.”
Merkel had gone into quarantine at home on Sunday evening. She had previously been informed that on Friday she had contact with a doctor who has now tested positive for the coronavirus. The doctor had vaccinated Merkel preventively against pneumococci.
