[이데일리 스타in 이석무 기자] Chan-seong Jeong (35, Korean Zombie MMA), a ‘Korean Zombie’ who got a chance to challenge for the UFC title again after nearly 9 years, expressed his determination to “return with the UFC featherweight championship belt for the first time in Korea.”
Chansung Jung will challenge current UFC featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovsky (34, Australia) at the main event (location undecided) of the mixed martial arts tournament ‘UFC 273’ on April 10 (hereafter Korean time).
For Chan-Sung Jung, this is his first title fight in 9 years since he challenged the then-champion Jose Aldo (Brazil) in 2013, but withdrew due to a TKO defeat in the fourth round.
On the 13th, Chansung Jung shared his thoughts on returning to the title fight through his YouTube channel.
Chansung Jung said, “After slipping in the title fight with Jose Aldo in 2013, I was determined to try again, but it took me 9 years to do so.
“But then I felt a lot that it would be of no use if I didn’t win,” he added.
Champion Chansung Jung will face, Volkanovsky is the strongest featherweight champion with 20 victories in mixed martial arts, including 10 victories in UFC. After defeating Max Holloway (USA) to become the champion, he is continuing his winning streak.
Volkanovski was originally scheduled to fight Holloway in the main event of UFC 272 on March 6th at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
However, when Holloway was unable to play due to an injury, he directly named Chan-Sung Jung, fourth in the featherweight ranking, as a substitute challenger, and Chan-Sung Jung accepted this, and a title fight was completed.
Chan-seong Jung said, “I don’t see Volkanovsky as huge, it’s a human-to-human fight,” and said, “I believe that victory is possible and I have a lot of such weapons.”
Chansung Jung, who debuted in the UFC in 2011 at the age of 24, has been active in the UFC for over 10 years. He was also in his mid-30s.
Chansung Jung said, “I have a lot of things that I didn’t have in my 20s, and I can show a stronger side of me.
He also exclaimed, “It has been a dream in my martial arts life to bring a UFC champion belt.
Chansung Jung will move to Arizona, USA next month to start training in earnest. He is preparing with coach Eddie Cha of Fight Ready. Many fighters, including former UFC two-weight champion Henry Cejudo, will help Jung Chan-seong as his sparring partner.
Chansung Jung expressed his anticipation, saying, “(Former light heavyweight champion) John Jones said he would help with wrestling training.”
Chansung Jung emphasized that there is no need to worry about the shoulder condition that fans are concerned about.
“I’ve improved a lot since December of last year,” he said. “I thought it would be enough to rehabilitate in January and February, but fortunately, the match was postponed for a month, so I was able to fully recover.”
“Actually, I was going to play even if my shoulder wasn’t good,” he said.
