On Friday, the first infection with the virus was reported in China, which in recent months in Europe and the United States has mainly been detected in men who have sex with men.

The infected person in Chongqing, in southwestern China, was placed in quarantine immediately after arriving in the city. The risk of an outbreak is small, according to local authorities. The patient is stable and tested negative for Covid-19, it said.

Wu Zunyou, the chief epidemiologist at China’s CCDC health agency, made his recommendation this weekend in a post via the Chinese social networking platform Weibo. He advises avoiding skin-to-skin contact with “strangers” or persons who have returned from abroad in recent weeks.
