Human rights lawyer Wang Quanzhang has been released in China. He was sentenced to 4.5 years in prison for undermining state power early last year. Among other things, he handled cases of possible torture by the police and assisted members of a forbidden spiritual movement.
Wang is now back at his home in Jihan city, his wife says on Twitter. Tenants were in the house. They were sent away on the orders of the police, writes Wang’s wife, Li Wenzu.
Li Wenzu and their children are not yet allowed to visit Wang. The authorities first put him in quarantine for a fortnight because of the corona crisis.
Wang’s wife tells the British newspaper The Guardian that the government is using corona as an excuse and in fact putting him under house arrest. “The government continues to restrict him in his personal freedom and forces us to remain separate.” She calls it shameless. “Who says it is only fourteen days? I don’t trust them. As long as my husband isn’t free, I will keep fighting.”
