An accident on the E19 in Kontich resulted in a long traffic jam towards Antwerp on Friday afternoon. A driver drove into it on a truck on the roadside lane just as an inspector from the road police was carrying out a check. The latter escaped death as if by miracle.

The accident happened when a team of the federal road police checked a truck on the (wide) hard shoulder of the E19 in Kontich in the direction of Antwerp. Just as an inspector was standing on the steps of the truck’s cab to talk to the driver, a passing car pulled into the same cab from the side. The impact thus took place under the inspector, as it were, which probably saved his life.
After the impact, the Dacia bounced back onto the track up to the central reservation. Then it came to a second collision with a Volkswagen. The driver of the latter was slightly injured. The lady in the Dacia was trapped, the fire brigade had to cut the roof off to free her. She was taken to hospital in critical condition.
As a miracle, the policeman was at first sight not seriously injured, he was taken to the UZA in Edegem for inspection. It is not yet entirely clear how the accident could have happened.
The accident blocked three lanes and traffic had to cross the hard shoulder. The highway was also completely closed for the photogrammetry service for a while. Once the site was mapped, the vehicles could be hoisted and the track was cleared.
