Comet heading for the Sun is 7 times bigger than one of the moons of Mars

Astrologers from the international collaborative Dark Energy Survey (DES) project report new data on comet 2014 UN271, which could be up to 150 km in diameter, almost 7 times the diameter of Phobos, a satellite of Mars.

According to the RT website, successive studies have specified the size of this celestial body, highlighting that its mass is 10 times greater than that of Comet Hale-Bopp, which was baptized as the Great Comet of 1997.

Not only would 2014 UN271 be bigger than the moon of Mars, it would also surpass asteroid 55 Pandora and the space rock known as Arrokoth, according to an analysis by astronomer Will Grater.

The qualifying megacomet of the Oort Cloud was discovered in 2014. At first, it was mistaken for a dwarf planet, but later it was discovered that it had signs of activity, after which it was reclassified as a comet.

Using data analyzed in recent years, between 2014 and 2018, the object moved in the cosmos about 20 to 23 AU (Astronomical Unit: average distance between the Earth and the Sun). Astronomers estimate that it will reach its closest approach to Earth as it orbits Saturn in 2031.
