Corona in Berlin: Eight dead and infected in 1937 in Berlin – Berlin

Eight people in Berlin have now died of complications from a corona virus infection. According to Tagesspiegel information, an 81-year-old died on Wednesday afternoon in a Vivantes hospital that had been tested positive. The health administration confirmed this case on request. It is not yet known whether he had a previous illness.

Health Senator Dilek Kalayci (SPD) previously spoke of “two other people” in an interview with the “Berliner Zeitung” who died at the age of 82 as a result of Covid-19. In fact, it was the 81-year-old and a previously reported fourth death, an 83-year-old. On Wednesday, this was the first time that two deaths were recorded in one day due to the virus.

The Senate Department of Health announced three more deaths on Thursday evening. Age and gender are not yet known.

The previously died Corona infected were 95, 70 and 42 years old, all of them were men. The first Corona death in Berlin was a 95-year-old with severe previous illnesses who had succumbed to the consequences of the infection last Friday. On Monday it was announced that a 70-year-old Berliner died after a corona infection.

The case of an exceptionally young patient is striking: On Tuesday evening, the Tagesspiegel learned of a 42-year-old who had died after a diagnosis of Covid 19; the health administration then confirmed the case in its daily press release on the pandemic situation.

The man had been treated in a Lichtenberg hospital. However, according to the Tagesspiegel information, the person affected probably had significant previous illnesses – his lungs were said to have been severely affected. For data protection reasons, no further details were available.

The corona virus can cause severe lung disease Covid-19. It is particularly dangerous for seniors and people with previous illnesses. However, virologists had always pointed out that serious illnesses can also occur in younger people.

1645 confirmed coronavirus cases, most of them male

There are currently confirmed cases of the novel corona virus in Berlin in 1937. According to the Senate administration, the contact persons are identified, contacted and isolated. Kalayci’s staff wrote: 1,049 people are male, 885 are female. Gender was not transmitted for three people.

The Robert Koch Institute modified its definitions on Tuesday: Now, the contact person of a confirmed Covid 19 case is also counted as a Covid 19 case if it shows the typical symptoms.

More than 200 Covid-19 patients in the hospital

Of those infected in Berlin, 235 people are treated in the hospital, 46 of them in intensive care. All other victims are isolated at home. The normal capacities for inpatient accommodation are currently sufficient. According to the health administration, Berlin’s clinics have 1045 ventilators on intensive care beds. About 80 percent of these are occupied on average, which means that 200 places in intensive care units are available for the treatment of Covid 19 patients in the short term.

However, because the numbers are increasing significantly, the Senate wants to expand capacities. A separate Covid-19 hospital will play a central role in this, which is due to start in Hall 26 of the exhibition center this week. It is designed for up to 1000 patients. As many places as possible should also be equipped with ventilators.

However, this clinic is not intended for the most severe cases. They should be dealt with in the Charité. The university hospital has a center for the therapy of patients with acute lung failure with 56 treatment places.

Disaster plan divides clinics into three levels

The plans are summarized in a catalog of measures to “Ensure acute, intensive care in the epidemic case Covid-19 for the State of Berlin”, which intensive care physicians have submitted to the Senate. It divides the city’s hospitals with intensive care beds into three levels.

Accordingly, the Charité, as a level 1 center, is to coordinate the entire intensive care of Covid 19 patients. It is said to assign 16 coronavirus cases to 16 clinics in the second stage. Level 3 includes 20 other hospitals with intensive care beds, which are initially reserved for the care of other patients. [Lesen Sie hier mehr über Berlins Plan für den Katastrophenfall.]

Problem staff: Covid 19 clinic alone needs 800 employees

One of the biggest challenges is staffing the clinics. The Berlin Hospital Society (BKG), which includes state, private, denominational and non-profit clinics, is therefore looking for specialists with a public call: It calls on all Berliners with medical training to contact institutions that match the respective qualification profile .

For the shift operation of the new Covid 19 hospital alone, project manager Albrecht Broemme anticipates a need for 800 employees. To do this, he wants to recruit staff from places where they are not currently on duty, for example from currently closed rehabilitation clinics. In addition, doctors and nurses could be considered, who were previously booked as so-called staff from the established hospitals for large, predictable operations.
