At the start of the week, a total of more than 250,000 coronavirus infections are registered in Brazil. Now another sad record follows: For the first time, more than 1,000 people die within a day. President Bolsonaro is criticized.
For the first time, more than 1,000 corona pandemic deaths have been recorded in Brazil within 24 hours. According to the Ministry of Health, 1179 deaths have been recorded since the previous day. The total number of officially counted deaths in Brazil rose to 17,971. According to the Ministry, the number of infections recorded grew by 17,408 new cases to 271,628.
Brazil now ranks third in the world in infection numbers behind the United States and Russia. The country was ahead of Britain in statistics on Monday.
Experts: The number of unreported cases is high
However, experts estimate that the number of infections in Brazil could be 15 times higher than officially recorded. In the most populous Latin American country, an enormous number of unreported cases is suspected, since there are only relatively few corona tests. Experts also expect that the peak of the spread of the novel virus in Brazil will not be reached until June.
Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro is accused of downplaying the corona crisis in his country. In the past, the ultra-right head of state described the lung disease Covid-19, which was caused by the virus, as “little flu”. Bolsonaro repeatedly criticizes the corona restrictions imposed by Brazilian states because of their negative effects on the economy. Due to disagreements with Bolsonaro about dealing with the pandemic, two health ministers have left the cabinet in recent weeks.
