The drastic increase in the need for protective clothing in medical facilities in Germany during the Corona crisis has led to a “price explosion”, according to a media report.
For example, the purchase value for high-quality so-called FFP2 respirators has increased by 3000 percent from EUR 0.45 to EUR 13.52 per piece within a few days, reports NDR, WDR and “Süddeutsche Zeitung” based on joint research. The market for medical protective clothing is reported to be in “chaos” and increasingly also dubious practices.
«It’s wild west. Everyone is now trying to enrich themselves, to take advantage of the hardship of the hospitals, »said Olaf Berse, Managing Director of Clinicpartner, a nationwide purchasing community for hospitals, old people’s and nursing homes. Some of the offers are downright criminal. Filters are not functional, the certificates are forged. This endangers patients and staff.
The labor inspectorate in Lower Saxony has reportedly warned of a case of fraud by a fictitious pharmaceutical wholesaler from Bremen. The company is sending a fake certificate.
The SPD health politician Karl Lauterbach called for the state to remedy the supply of medical protective clothing. “This is not something that the market could even solve in the beginning,” said Lauterbach to the research network of NDR, WDR and “Süddeutscher”. He called for the creation of a federal agency that would commission companies in Germany to produce.
