Coronavirus in Belgium – Review of the day: slight decrease in new contaminations

Between July 21 and July 27, 1.418 new Sars-CoV-2 contaminations were detected on average per day, down 4% from the previous week, according to figures from the Sciensano Public Health Institute updated on Saturday morning.

These figures are delivered around 6 am, they are likely to change during the day with the arrival of more complete data for the day yesterday and the days preceding.

The reproduction rate (Rt) is established at 1,14. When it is less than 1, the epidemic is considered to be decreasing. The Rt is the number of people that a person can infect. It is calculated on the basis of hospitalizations. An outbreak should continue if the Rt is greater than ‘1’ and decrease if the Rt is less than ‘1’.

Near 55.300 Average tests were also performed each day, for a positivity rate of 2.9%.

Among Belgians over 18, 71.4% are fully vaccinated and 83,4% have received at least one dose of a vaccine against Covid-19 (i.e. nearly 8 million people).

New hospitalizations: 32,9 per day between July 24 and 30 (+ 22%)

Total: 317 beds are occupied at the hospital by Covid-19 patients (+ 16%), including 96 in intensive care.

Departures: 30.1 on average over the last 7 days.

Between July 21 and July 27, 2,7 people died per day on average as a result of the virus (+ 171%).
