(ANSA) – ROME, AUGUST 14 – “Coronavirus infections continue to grow exponentially in the Americas, the United States and Latin America in particular. So even the Italian consular network is forced to deal with Covid-19. In fact, there are several diplomatic-consular offices that have been closed because there have been cases of contagion within them “. This was reported in a note by the Undersecretary for Foreign Affairs with responsibility for Italians in the world, Ricardo Merlo, specifying that “some of these have already reopened, others will do so in the coming days” and at the same time recommending compatriots in the countries most at risk to go there only “as a matter of urgency”. “Up to now – Undersecretary Merlo specified – we are talking about at least twenty locations, including Embassies and Consulates. They range from the Italian Embassy in Mexico to that in Belgrade, from the General Consulate of Miami to that of Buenos Aires. The UN representative office in New York has also been hit “. In addition to these – he adds – “the Embassy of Italy in Doha, Abidjan, Caracas, La Paz, Tashkent, Bogotà, San Jose, Manila were affected by Covid-19. The same fate for the Consulate General in Recife”. A situation that creates discomfort among fellow countrymen abroad – observes Merlo – but necessary to avoid the development of new outbreaks in case of infection.
