The Federal Council enters the race for a corona vaccine. The Defense Department headed by Federal Councilor Viola Amherd (57) and the Interior Department headed by Federal Councilor Alain Berset (48) are expected to begin contract negotiations with vaccine manufacturers. “The Federal Council anticipates costs of around CHF 300 million for the necessary vaccine doses and ensuring availability.”
This morning Albert Baehny (67), head of the Swiss pharmaceutical supplier Lonza, caused a sensation: his company is working flat out to find a vaccine. But in the interview with the “Tages-Anzeiger”, the manager had “not yet had time to discuss the question of who will get it afterwards and whether the distribution will work out”. “We don’t have the vaccine. It belongs to the Moderna company. And it will decide who it will be sold to. »
Berset also admitted at the media conference that the need will be great worldwide if the vaccine is available. But you have to ensure distribution worldwide, it cannot be that only the producing countries are involved, says Federal Councilor Berset. And: “That shouldn’t be a question of money.”
Many companies are currently researching a vaccine that races should ultimately only make one or two companies. The federal government is interested in the end product and not in the individual components, says Berset.
Daniel Koch (65) from the Federal Office of Public Health is optimistic that Switzerland will also get enough vaccine doses. This is not the first time that vaccines have to be distributed around the world. “We do everything we can to create access for the population.” The World Health Organization (WHO) is also committed to fair distribution.
CHF 14.2 billion for unemployment insurance
The unemployment fund is again to be supported with CHF 14.2 billion. The increase in short-time work has resulted in unemployment insurance becoming heavily in debt.
In order to avoid an increase in wage contributions, the Federal Council wants to submit a supplementary loan of over 14 billion to the parliament, which will also somewhat limit the right to short-time work. There are details here.
Hallelujah! Federal Council saves Pentecost service
The Federal Council is accelerating the easing again. From May 28th, services with a protection concept may take place again. This means that trade fairs can be held again from Pentecost.
The Federal Council also gave an outlook on June 8th. In the next easing step, the campsites should now also be allowed to open again. The rule also applies that a maximum of four people may sit at one table in restaurants. Meetings with more than five people should also take place again. The final decision will not be made until next week’s Federal Council meeting. There is an overview of the openings here.
Health Minister Berset draws a positive interim conclusion when dealing with the coronavirus. The population knows the rules and for the most part adheres to them. However, further efforts are needed: “We don’t want to stumble before the finish line.” And he is optimistic: “We can do Corona!” (brb / SDA)
