Geneva.- The World Health Organization declared this Friday that the most recent tests have yielded “unequivocal evidence” that the remdesivir, the remedy that the American president used Donald Trump When you contracted the coronavirus, it had little or no effect on severe cases of the disease.
The WHO announced on Friday the results of six months of tests on various drugs to determine whether they were effective against the coronavirus.
The study, which was not reviewed by other scientists, found that four treatments -remdesivir, hydroxychloroquine, lopinavir / ritonavir and interferon- have “little or no effect” in terms of preventing the patient from dying within a month or in terms of the recovery of hospitalized patients.
Most of these treatments had already been ruled out, but remdesivir, an antiviral drug, had been approved in the United States, the United Kingdom, and the European Union. Stocks of the drug are limited, and the European Medicines Agency is examining reports that remdesivir is harmful to the kidneys.
Martin Landray, a professor of medicine and epidemiology at the University of Oxford, said that the WHO results for hydroxychloroquine and lopinavir resemble a study he conducted in Britain.
“The point here is that remdesivir does not have a noticeable effect on patient survival,” Landray said in a statement. He explained that the drug is recommended in some countries but there are problems of supplies, cost and access.
“This is a drug that is administered intravenously for between five and 10 days,” said Landray, noting that the cost of treatment is about $ 2,550 for each application.
“Covid affects millions of people and their families around the world. We need equally affordable treatments for all ”, declared the expert.
The cocktail of treatments given to President Trump included remdesivir.
The WHO stated that the study, which covered more than 30 countries, examined the effects of the treatments on mortality rates, taking into account whether the patient needed a ventilator and how long they spent in hospital.
