The beginning of the end of GAZ.
Once the Gorky Automobile Plant produced the most elite and coveted cars of the USSR, which only high-ranking officials and directors could afford, but now GAZ is not in the best position and has not produced cars for a long time. However, the Gorky plant had interesting projects, such as a pickup truck based on the GAZ-3307. A rather interesting project, which could be better than the UAZ “Pickup”, if not for one detail.
Only a 2.4-liter engine was installed under the hood, which produced 100 horsepower and was paired with a standard manual gearbox. The pickup had a frame structure and a high cab from GAZ-3307, the power unit, suspension and axle were taken from the standard Volga GAZ-31029.
The original “Frankenstein” could become massive and quite successful, but its design causes an extremely incomprehensible feeling. The cabin stands out too much and does not fit into the overall picture of this pickup and if GAZ had chosen the standard front end from the Volga, it would have looked much better and more harmonious.
In general, this is a rather interesting project, which would be popular because of its pickup body and engines, which can be easily repaired and improved. Unfortunately, only one copy of the GAZ-2307 was released, but it did not receive further development, since in 1996 the GAZ-2308 Ataman was released, which can be called a rethinking of this pickup.
In the USSR and in the post-Soviet era, there were many interesting projects not only at the Gorky Automobile Plant, but also at other automakers, but there was no money for their implementation, although many were unique and unparalleled.
