Covid-19: How to avoid getting infected by Ómicron? UNAM issues recommendations – El Sol de México

The arrival of the Ómicron variant in the middle of the winter season increased the number of infections in the world and at the same time the people’s concern about catching the virus or being reinfected. For this reason, the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) issued a series of recommendations so as not to be one of the more than 4 million positive cases in the country.

The doctor Samuel Ponce de León, head of the University Commission for the Attention of the Coronavirus Emergency, recalled that SARS-CoV-2 transmission is through air droplets that are expelled when speaking, sneezing and coughing, which remain floating in the environment, especially in closed places. Next, we present the tips that UNAM gave to avoid getting infected:

Correct use of face masks

The UNAM expert pointed out that A fundamental barrier against Covid-19 and its variants is keeping a healthy distance and correct use of face masks, which should be placed up to the bridge of the nose and below the chin.

“Whenever we are in closed or semi-closed environments (classroom, offices, churches…) and even in congregations of people outdoors, we must wear a mask and maintain a healthy distance.”

What mask is recommended to use?

When in doubt about which face mask guarantees greater protection against the virus, Dr. Samuel Ponce de León pointed out that everyone is helpful, “it’s better than nothing”; however, he recommended three-layer masks, the KN95, for “its very high efficiency for the particulate filter”, and those that fit behind with two very strong garters, “they close completely and make it hermetic”.

Ventilation of closed spaces

The Coordinator of the University Health Research Program mentioned that it is important to maintain proper ventilation in closed spaces such as workplaces, schools, etc.

In addition, he commented that in the event that a person presents symptoms of the disease, suspects that they have Covid-19 or was in contact with a positive case, must self-isolate to prevent the spread of the virus.

“Until I have full knowledge of what situation I am experiencing, I will be able to make a decision. If I suspend isolation or quarantine. Or if I am going to do a study or if I am going to consult my doctor,” he explained.

How to avoid Covid infections in public transport?

One of the places with the highest risk of contagion is public transport due to the large number of people who occupy it, which is why Ponce de León stressed that to avoid being so exposed to contracting the virus, vehicle windows must be kept open and proper hygiene must be maintained, especially with hands.

It must also use the mask correctly– if possible use two – and do not take them off or take them with your hands if they have not previously washed them.

What to do if a family member suspects or tested positive for Covid?

In the event that a family member or acquaintance with whom you have recently had contact tested positive for Covid-19 or suspects of having contracted it, the UNAM expert commented that in addition to self-confinement, it is important that eating utensils are washed with soap and water. “No other care is necessary,” he said.

Can I get infected through utensils?

Dr. Ponce de León stressed that the transmission of the virus is by air and not through contact with eating utensils – if they have already been washed – or through food consumption. However, he warned that a person can get Covid-19 by touching a surface or object where respiratory secretions have been deposited by coughing or sneezing into them and then the person holding their nose, eyes, or mouth.

Samuel Ponce de León recalled that The current increase in infections in the country is due to the variants of Covid-19, mainly to Ómicron, for which he asked the population not to trust and abide by the recommended measures, “we must be afraid of them and maintain precautions to avoid infection.”

“No one can guarantee that the evolution of an Omicron infection will be mild. We cannot, because the virus is said to have less virulence, be negligent or self-indulgent with the precautions we have been taking up to now,” he said.
