The British National Statistical Service estimates that 2.3 million more people nationwide have contracted the SARS-CoV-2 virus over the previous week, the highest estimate since last April. The virus is most prevalent in Scotland.The new infections will be attributed to Ómicron variants BA.4 and BA.5. Despite the increase, the total has yet to reach the record 4.9 million detected in late March at the height of the Ómicron BA.2 outbreak.
Hospitalization numbers also continue to rise, with relevance for admission to Intensive Care Units among older age groups.
The authorities ask citizens to stay attentive to a set of symptoms, which have become more varied since the detection of the first cases of Covid-19.
According to the study of the ZOE application, released in March 2020 and which helps to track the most common symptoms of the disease, two symptoms have emerged in the head area.
According to the indications obtained through the application and studied by King’s College London, 69 percent of users reported a runny nose and 64 percent complained of migraines.
The latter are often a sign of infection and researchers have concluded that people infected with the new strains of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus tend to suffer from moderate to severe migraines or have throbbing or sharp pains.
At the moment, The five warning signs for a Covid-19 infection, according to the application, are a runny nose, sore throat, migraine, persistent cough and fatigue, from medium to severe.
Tim Spector, professor and principal investigator at the ZOE Covid Study Application, told journalists that “older symptoms” of Covid-19 dropped comparatively down the list of symptoms, including fever and loss of smell and taste.
British citizens with these Covid-19 symptoms are advised to isolate themselves and get tested and, if positive, follow the instructions of the country’s National Health Service.
However, isolation has not been mandatory for six months, with the Government asking people to act in a “responsible” way.
In most of the planet, the restrictions imposed by the Covid-19 pandemic have been lifted as the disease is controlled mainly thanks to vaccination policies.
The EMA, the European Medicines Agency, announced this Friday its new plans for Covid-19 vaccines, stressing that mRNA vaccines modified to include new strains of the Ómicron variant may increase and extend protection when used as reinforcement.
