DAMES AT SEA Opens at the Theater At The Center


Dames at Sea debuted Sunday, May 5 at the Munster Theater at the Center. Art director and director Linda Fortunato has chosen Kelly Felthous as Ruby, Todd Aulwurm as Dick, Colette Todd as Mona Kent, Sierra Schnack as Joan, Sam Shankman as Lucky and Steven Strafford as Hennesey and The Captain in spring music production. Dames at Sea and continues until 2 June.

Dames at Sea, the long Off-Broadway hit that brought celebrity to Bernadette Peters in 1969, opened another round of rave reviews on Broadway in 2015. This amusing and captivating show, based on the nostalgia of the Hollywood musicals of the years, is in the spotlight focused on the theater at the center of the stage for the first time in the history of the three decades of theater.

"Dames at Sea is a delightful musical escape in a bygone era," said Fortunato. "It's entertainment for the whole family."

Dames at Sea, with a book and texts by George Haimsohn and Robin Miller and music by Jim Wise, starts with Ruby, getting off the bus from Utah, after arriving in New York City with a dream to make it big on Broadway. The promising girl is hired to dance in the choir of a new Broadway show and meets Dick, a sailor, who also has ambitions as a songwriter. During the opening night, when they learn that their theater was demolished, Ruby and the cast, with Dick's help and some adoring sailors, make plans to perform the show on a naval warship.

Kelly Felthous (Ruby) makes his TATC debut after a series of Seussicals at the Marriott Theater. Other credits include roles like Roxie Hart in Chicago and Audrey in Little Shop of Horrors on Drury Lane. He also played Sally Bowles in the Paramount Theater & # 39; s Cabaret and Glinda in the National Tour of Wicked.

Todd Aulwurm (Dick), who is making his TATC debut, is a native of northwest India and graduated from Crown Point High School and the Indiana University. His recent credits include roles in TRU and The Butcher & # 39; s Son at the Chicago Musical Theater Festival. He has appeared in Mama Mia, Thorlyly Modern Millie, Smokey Joe's Café and Beauty and the Beast at the Little Theater on the Square. At the Rocky Mountain Repertory Theater he performed in The Little Mermaid, Rock of Ages, Titanic, All Shook Up, The Addams Family and 42nd Street.

Colette Todd (Mona Kent) is returning to TATC where she performed previously as Gwen in The Strange Couple, Lady of the Lake in Spamalot and Sandra in Big Fish. Other roles in TATC include Women on the Edge of a Nervous Breakdown and The Beve! Hillbillies. At Light Opera Works she appeared as Aldonza in Man of La Mancha, Annie Oakley in Annie Get Your Gun and Nancy in Oliver!

Sierra Schnack (Joan) will also debut in TATC. Recent roles include Ali in Mama Mia and Anytime Annie on 42nd Street in Drury Lane Oakbrook. He also starred in Kate in Shrew & # 39; d at the First Folio Theater and was part of the Legally Blonde Ensemble at the Paramount Theater.

Sam Shankman (Lucky) returns to TATC after starring recently at Sawyer in last year's Miracle on 34th Street The Musical. Recent Chicago credits include South Pacific on Drury Lane, Spring Awakening at the Blank Theater, Curious George at the Northbrook Theater, Madagascar in Chicago Shakespeare and Shrew & # 39; d at the First Folio.

Steven Strafford (Hennesey and Captain) is makin! g its debut in TATC. He was seen as the demented dentist in Little Shop of Horrors at the Drury Lane Theater and Hortensio in Shrew & # 39; d at the First Folio. He was also seen as Chick Clark in Wonderful Town at The Goodman Theater and as Jesus and Stephen Hawking in End Days. He toured nationally and internationally as Prince Herbert in Spamalot.

Director Linda Fortunato is in her fourth season as artistic director of TATC. Among his recent works there are direction and choreography of various productions, including Miracle on 34th Street: The Musical, Ghost: The Musical, Steel Magnolias, Big River, The Tin Woman, Cabaret, Annie Warbucks and A Christmas Story as well as choreograph Spamalot, Big Fish, A Christmas Carol: The Musical, Guys and Dolls, Crazy for You and Fiddler on the Roof. She was nominated for five Joseph Jefferson Awards! she worked as a choreographer and director and received the Jeff Award Equity and Non Equity for exceptional Choreography in the 2013-2014 season, getting Theater at the Center's first prize for her 42nd Street choreography.

Dames at Sea's creative team includes Scenic Designer Jessie Howe, Lighting Designer Guy Rhodes, Sound Designer Barry Funderburg, Costume Designer Brenda Winstead, Wig Designer Kevin Barthel and Property Designer Emily Hartig. Stage Manager is Jessica Banaszak. William Underwood is musical director. Linda Fortunato is in collaboration with Richard Friedman, General Manager of TATC, and Ann Davis, head of TATC production.
