Deontay Wilder puts his WBC heavyweight crown on the line against Dominic Breazeale on Sunday (AEST), not upset by a storm of criticism following his votes to cause a death in the ring.

Even for the obscure standards of boxing, where threats of violence are a real barter, Wilder's gruesome pre-war comments have been condemned by many in this sport as beyond the pale.

"His life is at stake for this fight and I mean his life," Wilder said this week as he prepares for Saturday's meeting at Barclays Center in Brooklyn. "I'm still trying to get a body on my record.

"Dominic Breazeale asked this. This is the only sport where you can kill a man and pay him at the same time. It's legal. So why not use my right to do it … if he dies, he dies."

As always, in Wilder's observations, it is more than a suspicion of pantomime, born from a peak cigarette instinct to arouse interest in a struggle that, explicitly, was not considered worthy of the pay-per-status view in the United States.

There is, however, an unquestionable bad blood between Wilder (40-0-1, 39 ko) and Breazeale (20-1, 18 points), which can be traced back to a clash between the two fighters at the beginning of 2017.

After performing on the same card in Birmingham, Alabama, Wilder states that Breazeale made threatening remarks to his brother in a hotel in the city, later that night. A furious Wilder tracked down Breazeale, leading to a brawl involving the fighters' entourage.

"I just put my hand on Breazeale's face and told him: & # 39; Never come to my city ever threatening my family. Never do it," said Wilder, who promised to inflict fatal damage on Breazeale more than once this week.

"If that happens, I'm not going to apologize," he told reporters. "He always asked this."
