Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. today announced its collaboration with award-winning director Na Hong-jin to create the short film titled “Faith,” which tells a complex story about an incident involving a gunman who struggles with the notion that someone’s worth is not absolute. Entirely recorded at the Galaxy S23 UltraIt’s part of the campaign Filmed #withGalaxy which gives leading filmmakers around the world the opportunity to shoot with the Samsung Galaxy S series to help encourage all Galaxy users to express their creativity.
Hong-jin is known for movies like “The Chaser,” “The Yellow Sea,” and “The Wailing,” and his signature style often reflects dark imagery, horror, and a unique Mise-en-Scène to create suspense and excitement. For “Faith,” Hong-jin took advantage of the Galaxy S23 Ultra’s various videography features to produce beautiful images and sharp details, even while shooting in low light.
“I wanted to show that I can make professional-level clips with the Galaxy S23 Ultra, and this overall experience was very interesting and exciting,” said Hong-jin. In addition to being able to capture details of subjects even in the dark, Hong-jin said, “I think a big advantage was that I was able to vividly and easily capture movement from any angle on the Galaxy S23 Ultra, which otherwise would have been impossible with a bigger camera.”
Like a professional camera
In 2022, Samsung introduced its features of Nightography, which allows users to take clear and clean photos in low-light situations. In 2023, the Galaxy S23 Ultra ushered in even more cutting-edge photography and videography solutions, suited to almost any lighting condition. In “Faith,” viewers see such advancements up close, such as AI-enhanced Image Signal Processing (ISP) that enhances color and detail, and duplicate Optical Image Stabilization (OIS) that reduces motion blur and judder by minimizing judder from a photographer’s movements.
Film director Chung Jung-Hoon, who worked with Hong-jin on “Faith,” said, “I tried to reduce the lighting even more to bring out the dark atmosphere as if I was shooting a normal movie, and to my surprise, the details they were vivid. The function HDR of the Galaxy S23 Ultra helped me capture dark sections.”
“Even when the camera was constantly moving, it didn’t lose focus, and what was amazing about the Galaxy S23 Ultra was that the 120 frame was able to express very natural motion blur and speed just like a high-speed professional camera.” Jung Hoon said.
