Jaouad Achab was eliminated in the round of 16 of the Olympic taekwondo tournament in -68 kg on Sunday in Tokyo. The Brussels resident lost 18-11 against the Dominican Bernardo Pie.
Led 7-2 after the first round, Ahab, 6th in the world, could not break free in the second round and was led 12-5. In the third and final round, the 2015 world champion could not reverse the trend and had to lose 18-11. The Brussels resident could still hope to reach the repechage provided that Pie qualifies for the final.
But the Dominican was beaten 13-8 by Chinese Zhao Shuai in his next fight. Ahab took 5th place in the -63kg category at the Rio Olympics in 2016.
Belgium lost 14-21 to Serbia in their fourth game of the 3×3 Olympic basketball tournament on Sunday in Tokyo.
Against an experienced Serbian team still unbeaten in the tournament, the Lions fought on every ball in defense and caused fouls in attack. At the end of the match, Serbia, under the leadership of Dusan Domovic, author of 13 points, made the difference to win 14-21. On the Belgian side, Rafael Bogaerts finished top scorer with 6 points, Nick Celis added 4 points and Thibaut Vervoort and Thierry Marien 2.
Earlier on Sunday, the 3×3 Lions clinched their second victory in the tournament, beating Russia 21-16. On Saturday they beat Latvia 21-20 and lost to Japan 16-18. Belgium ends its second day of competition with a record of two wins and two losses. Two matches are still on the program on Monday against China (4:35 a.m. Belgian time) and the Netherlands (11:40 a.m. Belgian time).
On Tuesday, Belgium will play its last match against Poland at 7.40 a.m. Belgian time. Eight nations play the first 3×3 tournament in the history of the Olympics and each team plays seven matches. The first two qualify for the semi-finals while the teams classified from 3rd to 6th place will play a quarter-final. The last two are eliminated.
Charline Van Snick was beaten in the quarter-finals in the -52 kg category in judo at the Tokyo Olympics on Sunday in Japan.
The Liégeoise, 7th in the world, lost to the Italian Odette Giuffrida, 4th in the world, on a waza-ari 11 seconds from the regulatory end. In repechage, Charline Van Snick will be opposed to the British Chelsie Giles, 10th in the world.
World No. 1 Spanish golfer Jon Rahm has been forced to forfeit the Tokyo Olympics due to a positive Covid-19 test, the Spanish National Olympic Committee announced on Sunday.
“The positive result came out after undergoing a third consecutive PCR test, mandatory for anyone who has recently been to the UK, such as Jon Rahm, who just played The Open.”, specified the Spanish golf federation, which indicates that the first two tests were negative.
Rahm’s forfeit, one of the main medal chances for Spain, comes a few hours after that of the American Bryson DeChambeau, also tested positive for the coronavirus. Spain will only be represented by Adri Arnaus in the men’s golf event.
Ashleigh Barty was eliminated in the first round of the women’s singles at the Tokyo Olympic Games. The Australian, world No. 1, lost in straight sets 4-6, 3-6 in 1h34 against the Spanish Sara Sorribes Tormo, 48th in the world.
In the second round, Sorribes Tormo will face the winner of the duel between French Fiona Ferro, 64th in the world, and Latvian Anastasija Sevastova, 53rd in the world.
