Go back in the 9th century to England in this Netflix series, in which Alfred the Great defends the Kingdom of Wessex from the Viking invaders while Uhtred, a Saxon warrior with conflicting loyalties, fights to regain control of his kingdom. The medieval setting and elaborate battle sequences make it perfect if you feel it game of Thrones withdrawal. Three seasons are currently in streaming.
The Pillars of the Earth
This Starz miniseries is adapted from a novel by Ken Follett and concerns the construction of a cathedral in an English city in the 12th century, which plays like the Empress Matilda (Alison Pill) and Stephen of Blois (Tony Curran) fight for the throne after the death of Henry I. A sequel, Endless world, is set during the War of the Cents' years. Both are streaming on Starz.

Take Shakespeare's version of the Rose Wars in this series of BBC adaptations of his historical works. Covers of the first season Richard II, Henry IV part I, Henry IV, part II, is Henry V. The second season is based on all three parts of Henry VI, more Richard III. A stellar cast includes Jeremy Irons as Henry IV, Tom Hiddleston as Henry V, Benedict Cumberbatch as Richard III and Sophie Okonedo as Queen Margaret. It is available for purchase on Amazon Prime.

The Spanish princess it is actually the third miniseries that Starz produced based on the novels of Philippa Gregory. The first, Queen Bianca, It is set during the Rose Wars and focuses on Elizabeth Woodville, Edward IV's wife, and other women who played a role like Lancaster and Yorks who fought for control of England.

Jonathan Rhys-Meyers plays the infamous Henry VIII in this series of Showtime soapy, which debuted in 2007 and ran for four seasons. It is not the most historically accurate show, but it captures the deadly drama and complicated politics of the Tudor court. All 38 episodes are streamed on Netflix.
For a different take on Henry VIII, try Wolf Hall. This limited series, based on the novel by Hilary Mantel, focuses on the life of King Thomas Cromwell's adviser. Mark Rylance plays Cromwell, Damian Lewis is Henry and Claire Foy is Anne Boleyn. Critics loved the series, and got a 98% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It's streamed on Amazon Prime.
Jenna Coleman plays Queen Victoria and Tom Hughes is Prince Albert in this show about the life of the young monarch. In addition to the drama involving the royalty, it's time to tell the stories of the servants under the stairs, giving a little bit of Downton Abbey feel. PBS members can broadcast all three seasons for free with Passport; Seasons 1 and 2 are streamed on Amazon Prime.
Claire Foy plays another queen on this famous Netflix show about Queen Elizabeth II. The first two seasons are currently in streaming. The third – with Oscar winner Olivia Colman who will take the place of Elizabeth – will be previewed at the end of this year.
