Indian scientists reported a new discovery: as it turned out, the multiplication of coronavirus can be blocked using a very cheap and affordable tool, vitamin B12. A study to this effect was published in the IUMB Life magazine.
Sensational data was published by a group of researchers from the Manipal Academy of Higher Education and the Regional Center for Biotechnology on the basis of computer simulations. Initially, they set a goal: to find out which molecules, which are contained in natural products and biologically active substances, can suppress the nsp12 region of the genome of the SARS-Cov-2 virus, which is responsible for its reproduction. The best inhibition of viral cell replication (division) was vitamin B12 in the form of methylcobalamin. “This substance can be prescribed as a prophylactic agent for groups such as medical personnel, the elderly or those with underlying medical conditions to reduce the likelihood of infection and provide emergency care in the hospital,” the Indian scientists said in a statement.
Of course, much more research is needed to confirm these conclusions. Vitamin B12 is one of the most important vitamins affecting the emotional state and the cardiovascular system. The main function of B12 is to maintain the normal functioning of the nervous system. In addition, it participates in the processes of hematopoiesis, as well as in the synthesis of amino acids that protect the heart. As the doctor of the highest category Natalya Kurbatova says, the mental activity of a person and his emotional state depend on the content of cobalamin in our body. And when it is lacking, the body reacts with a mass of various symptoms. These are weakness, fatigue, constipation, loss of appetite, imbalance, tinnitus, goose bumps, tingling in the body, confusion, memory impairment, irritability, depression, psychosis
Other symptoms of B12 deficiency include stomatitis, anemia, and bleeding disorders. In addition, people with a cobalamin deficiency have an increased risk of cardiovascular disease. For children, vitamin B12 is essential for muscle growth and the development of body musculature.
The main sources of B12 are beef liver, meat, fish, shellfish, poultry, eggs and dairy products. B12 is consumed at an increased rate in chronic infections and the use of certain medications, and, of course, in those who deliberately deprive themselves of animal food, that is, in vegetarians. In addition, the reserves of cobalamin are “washed out” from smokers and those who like to put on the collar. The risk group for vitamin B12 deficiency is employees of hazardous industries, people after surgery on the gastrointestinal tract, including operations for weight loss, patients with digestive disorders, celiac disease and Crohn’s disease and people over 65 years old.
“B12 enhances the release of melatonin, one of the antioxidant molecules. It affects the mechanisms of innate immunity through the intestinal microbiota and has an anti-inflammatory effect. Therefore, it is quite possible that the vitamin may have antiviral activity, including against coronavirus infection. But since there is no serious scientific evidence for this, it is definitely impossible to talk about it, ”says Natalya Kurbatova.
As the head of the Department of Endocrinology and Holistic Medicine of the RUDN University, Professor Svetlana Kalinchenko told MK, it can be assumed that we are talking about the ability of vitamin B12 to influence erythropoiesis (the formation of erythrocytes) in the body: “No viruses, including coronavirus, like oxygen. It is known that advanced age is a risk factor for complications in coronavirus infection, and aging is chronic inflammation. It occurs when the body lacks oxygen, that is, when chronic hypoxia accumulates. And one of the reasons for this hypoxia is B12 deficiency. I do not know how this vitamin can affect the coronavirus itself, but the fact that chronic hypoxia develops due to its deficiency is a known fact. In general, B12 is one of the most important vitamins, without which there can be no normal erythropoiesis, that is, when it is lacking, the production of red blood cells begins to decrease. And their pronounced deficiency is the cause of anemia. To prevent this from happening, the body has learned to store this vitamin in the liver for many years (there is no other vitamin for such a long period of time). And this demonstrates its colossal significance. By the way, for its discovery in 1934, the Nobel Prize was awarded – scientists then established that dogs that were fed with the liver did not have anemia. So what the Indians described may speak of the indirect effect of the vitamin on the body during a viral infection through the improvement of erythropoiesis and a decrease in the severity of hypoxia. “
It should be noted that until now, no one has yet established a relationship between the severity of the infection and vitamin B12 deficiency. Similar studies were in relation to vitamin D. According to Svetlana Kalinchenko, one of the latest studies by scientists from Ireland showed that this vitamin is extremely important for the prevention of respiratory infections, including COVID-19. People who do not have a deficiency drink less antibiotics, they have better immunity. Evidence has emerged to support a role for vitamin D in preventing chest infections, especially in the elderly. The work of the Irish showed that people with vitamin D deficiency have a significantly weaker immune response to infection. In Russia, unfortunately, this vitamin is deficient in the majority. Especially for those who are overweight, who exercise little, and those with asthma or chronic lung disease.
