Rimini, Italy – Former European Central Bank President Mario Draghi lauded the European Union’s adaptability and collaborative spirit in navigating recent global crises during his remarks at the annual Rimini Meeting on August 23, 2025. Draghi specifically highlighted the EU’s willingness to overcome long-standing fiscal constraints, citing the implementation of common debt mechanisms through the Next Generation EU recovery plan as a pivotal moment.

Speaking to attendees, Draghi stated the EU demonstrated an ability to exceed expectations in its response to unprecedented challenges, particularly the COVID-19 pandemic. He emphasized that the collective effort to support member states during this period represented a significant departure from historical norms. The Next Generation EU program, established in July 2020, provided ample financial support to help EU countries recover from the economic and social impact of the pandemic.
