Earthquake off New Zealand – Tsunami Warning lifted

Wellington – Following a major 7.4-magnitude Pacific earthquake off the Kermadec Islands, authorities in New Zealand have canceled a tsunami alert after a short time. “Based on current information, it is judged that the quake is unlikely to have triggered a tsunami that threatens New Zealand,” tweeted the civil protection agency. At first, the authorities had warned about possible unusually strong currents in the coastal area. The Kermadec island chain is located almost 1000 kilometers northeast of the North Island of New Zealand.
