Ecuadorian presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio is killed in a shooting attack

Ecuador’s presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio was assassinated on wednesday by shots in an attack by unknown persons at the exit of a political meeting in a school in the north of Quito.

An Ecuadorian official, who asked not to be named because he was not authorized to comment, confirmed the attack and the death of the politician from 59 years. He did not give details of the reason for the attack.

The candidate for the party Build Ecuador Movement, was one of the stronger critical voices against corruption, especially during the government of former President Rafael Correa (2007-2017). He filed personal complaints in court against many of his highest ranking members.

He was married to Verónica Sarauz and leaves Five sons. As a result of the attack, several were injured, although a precise number is not known. The first versions indicate that three people fired bursts of shrapnel that impacted the applicant and other people.
