Emirates News Agency – “Bayanat” reveals the first self-driving taxis in the UAE

/ See our news No. 135 / Abu Dhabi, November 23 / WAM / “Bayanat Surveying Services”, the company specialized in geospatial systems, data analysis and artificial intelligence, revealed, within the activities of the “Abu Dhabi Smart City Summit”, its new fleet of self-driving vehicles under the brand Commercial / TXAI /, which represents the first fully automated taxis in the UAE, in the presence of His Excellency Omar bin Sultan Al Olama, Minister of State for Artificial Intelligence, Digital Economy and Remote Work Applications.

March 2021 witnessed the signing of a partnership between the Abu Dhabi Department of Municipalities and Transport and Bayanat, a subsidiary of the G42 group, under which the project of self-driving vehicles was developed and implemented. This partnership supports smart transportation innovations and constitutes a strong impetus for efforts to develop innovative transportation solutions.

Bayanat has enhanced the readiness of the first group of self-driving vehicles by launching the trial phases of joint driving during the current month.

The first phase of this project will see the operation of five TXAI vehicles on the roads of Yas Island, and the start of transporting passengers from 9 destinations, including hotels, restaurants, shopping centers and offices. During the second phase, more TXAI vehicles will be added in different locations in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. Although the vehicles are self-driving, a safety officer will be in the driver’s seat during the pilot phase.

During the initial phase, the focus will be on transportation vehicle services, and Bayanat will continue to work on building a multi-application technology system in the near future. This project is the first of its kind for the fourth-level autonomous vehicle trials in the Middle East and North Africa region. Bayanat has developed the simulation system, the operating system, the big data platform and the navigation system with an accuracy of less than one meter, using advanced algorithms for autonomous driving.

His Excellency Omar Sultan Al Olama stressed that the UAE government attaches great importance to the issue of smart mobility, and is keen to develop this sector and enhance its applications in the country, in a way that reflects positively on the lives of individuals and facilitates their lives, referring to the decision adopted by the Council of Ministers headed by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.
