“Manchester United will not participate in the Super League. We have heard the reaction from our fans, the UK government and other important stakeholders, ”said the Red Devils.
“Liverpool can confirm that its involvement in the European Super League project has been stopped,” said the statement of the reigning England champions.
For Tottenham, it is the president of the club Daniel Levy who is quoted in the press release to “regret the anxiety and the upheavals caused by this European Super League project”: “We thought it was important that our club participate in developments of a possible new structure, ”he explained.
Chelsea, who had already indicated their intention to withdraw from the project earlier in the evening, confirmed the news overnight. “As revealed earlier, Chelsea confirm that they have started the formal procedure to withdraw from the group which is developing a European Super League project. Having joined the group at the end of last week, we have now had time to fully consider the matter and have decided that our continued participation in these plans would not be in the best interest of the club, our supporters or the wider football community, ”the London club wrote in a statement.
After these announcements, there were only six clubs left involved in the Super League: the three Spaniards (Real Madrid, FC Barcelona and Atlético Madrid) and the three Italians (AC Milan, Inter Milan and La Juventus). Some, like the two Milanese clubs, however, have announced their intentions to leave the project too, according to several Italian media.
The “Super League” reacts
Shortly before 2 am, the “Super League” published a press release. The creators announce that they will “reconsider the most appropriate stages to reshape the project” of private competition supposed to compete with the Champions League of football, in the face of the numerous withdrawals of the founding clubs which they face.
This decision, which is similar to a suspension of the project, comes at the end of a crazy day, which saw the successive dissociation of half of the twelve founding clubs of this competition almost closed to other European teams, facing the outcry from supporters and threats from football authorities.
The six English clubs (Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United and Tottenham) initially engaged in this Super League announced Tuesday evening their withdrawal from this project “because of the pressure put on them”, added the organization. “Super League” in a statement sent to AFP just two days after the launch of his initiative.
The “Super League”, based in Spain, has nevertheless reiterated “convinced” that its proposal “is fully aligned with European law”, and that “the current status quo of European football must change”.
