World Health Organization or WHO revealed that corona virus can be transmitted through the air or airbone. Epidemiologists also recommend that people evaluate air ventilation in buildings and residences.

University of Indonesia (UI) Epidemiologist Expert Pandu Riono said buildings or houses that were poorly ventilated had the risk of accelerating the spread of the corona virus. He also asked the public to avoid closed rooms and seek air ventilation in good condition.

One of the efforts by cleaning the air conditioner or air conditioner. “Evaluate all buildings, especially those that only use air conditioning. AC must be checked and cleaned, if you can provide a filter,” Pandu said in a video conference on Saturday (11/7).

Head of the Eijkman Institute for Molecular Biology Professor Amin Soebandrio said the virus that originally flew in the air was in the form droplet or splashes of water that comes out of the mouth. However, droplet it evaporates and turns into small particles.

“When it flies partly it evaporates longer in the air because the water content decreases, the particles get smaller,” Amin said.

According to him, the time period for flying small particles in the air around eight hours. Therefore, the spread of the virus will be faster if in a poorly ventilated room.

“Ventilation in the home must be considered, the AC must be cleaned, it’s good if there is an AC filter,” he said.

WHO previously stated that airborne transmission occurred due to the spread of small particles in the form of aerosols that survive in the air for long distances and time. Aerosols are small respiratory droplets of less than 5 μm in diameter. In contrast to large respiratory drops or droplet which is 5-10 µm in diameter and falls to the ground within a few meters.

Transmission of the corona virus through the air can occur when medical personnel perform certain procedures that cause aerosol discharge. However, a number of studies have also stated that aerosols can float in the air without going through certain procedures, especially in confined spaces with poor air circulation.

Crowded closed spaces such as restaurants are very vulnerable to being the location of transmission. Especially if there is a person who has been infected with corona vise and has been silent for a long time in that place.

The theory of breathing, WHO said in its scientific guidelines, produced several hypotheses about the mechanism of transmission of the corona virus through the air. First, a number of droplets produce microscopic sized aerosols when they evaporate.

Second, normal breathing and speaking activities produce aerosols. In addition, a study also stated that aerosols can come out through sneezing and coughing.

“Therefore, susceptible people can breathe in aerosols and can become infected if they contain enough viruses to infect others,” the WHO wrote.
