Cian Uijtdebroeks – Flemish father and Polish mother – last year won as a newcomer with force majeure some strongly occupied climbing races. As a freshman junior he impressed this spring with a win in Kuurne-Brussels-Kuurne, after a stiff solo.
It should come as no surprise that the big teams have already turned a blind eye to the 17-year-old Uijtdebroeks. At the beginning of this month he was able to compete with the big boys during a short internship in Italy, at the invitation of Deceuninck-Quick Step.
Uijtdebroeks is currently riding in the strong Acrog-Tormans team of chairman Jef Robert. Wielerflits.nl does not shy away from the comparison with Remco Evenepoel. “On a climbing course in Spain, Cian went half a minute faster than Evenepoel. He does things I’ve never seen before”, Robert is lyrical.
The comparison with Evenepoel did not escape the Dutch YouTube phenomenon Bas Tietema either. “Cian Uijtdebroeks> Remco Evenepoel> Eddy Merckx. No further pressure on the career of this 17-year-old boy?” Tietema teased on Twitter.
Remco Evenepoel himself replied laconically: “If he doubles in BK, European Championship and World Cup we can talk. And if he wins the European Championship with at least a 10 minute lead.”
