Exercise has completely different effects on girls and boys in childhood and adolescence

A completely different relationship between physical activity and body fat in boys than in girls.

The researchers were a little surprised that there were such marked differences in terms of activity and BMI for girls and boys.

How is the activity level of children and young people related to the proportion of body fat they have? This is what the research group in Tidlig trygg in Trondheim at NTNU wanted to find out. They have followed Norwegian children over a number of years.

– Many studies show connections between physical activity and BMI or how round our bodies are. But which is the chicken or the egg? Do children and young people become less active because they get heavier, or do they gain more body fat because they are less active?
