Shitstorms are actually an internet phenomenon. Sometimes, however, they also arise in the real world, such as at the demonstration of farmers in Berlin at the end of November. Farmers from all over Germany had traveled to the capital on around 9,000 tractors to really give their opinion to politicians. Federal Environment Minister Svenja Schulze (SPD) was booed by the crowd in such a way that they fled after only a few minutes on stage. But Julia Klöckner, Federal Minister of Agriculture and CDUler, also had trouble hearing all of the “liars” and “practicing, practicing” calls.
This is a new experience for the CDU. For decades, farmers have been loyal followers of the Union. The thanked with a farmer-friendly policy. A particularly impressive example was the fact that the former Agriculture Minister Christian Schmidt (CSU) went it alone in 2017 when he voted in Brussels for the further approval of the controversial weed killer glyphosate – contrary to the cabinet agreement. Actually, he should have abstained.
