Clubs and countries may also switch to official matches five times next season. The RULES Committee IFAB and FIFA will announce this on Wednesday.
The rule, which was introduced due to the corona crisis, applies to all competitions, including the Eredivisie and Keuken Kampioen Division. For national coach Ronald Koeman of the Dutch national team, it means that he can make five substitutions at the European Championship next year.
The final decision on whether or not to apply the temporary change in the Netherlands still lies with the KNVB. A spokesman for the association could not yet confirm to the Algemeen Dagblad that next season may be changed five times in the Eredivisie and Keuken Kampioen Division.
The rule is already applied in the Premier League, Serie A and La Liga, among others. In those countries, the season is still played out after the corona break. As a result, those competitions will stand still for a relatively short time in the summer. In addition, an extra full playing calendar awaits in the new season, which again increases the risk of injuries.
To avoid many interruptions, teams have three options during the game to bring in the substitutions. Rest is not counted. In the case of an extension, even a sixth substitution is allowed.
